What did people do for fun in the 1950s?

There was a lot of things that the people in the fifties did for fun. Television and movies were popular, so watching both of those were common. Many children and teenagers played out side. Smaller children played with their toys, like hula hoops or Frisbees. Teenagers hung out together (as they do today). Many families would do things together, such as go to the beach or perhaps a movie or out to dinner. Music was extremely popular as well, so people listened to their favorite artists or went to their concerts.

Who was popular in the 1950s?

Elvis Presley was one of the most popular American singers of the 20th century. He was (and still is) a cultural icon commonly referred to as “The King of Rock n’ Roll” or just “The King”. His most popular songs are “Hound Dog”, “All Shook Up”, and “Heartbreak Hotel”. The majority of his songs were hits. He was in some movies. He had a total of 14 Grammy nominations and 3 wins. He has been inducted into the Rock N’ Roll Hall of Fame. His mansion known as “Graceland” is a common tourist attraction in Tennessee and is recognized as a National Historic Landmark.


Little Richard is an American singer, songwriter, musician, recording artist, and actor, considered key in the transition from rhythm and blues to rock and roll in the 1950s. His most famous hits are “Long Tall Sally”, “Keep A Knockin’”, and “Tutti Fruitti”. He was one of the first group of artists who were inducted into the Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame and received the Honorary Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award and many other awards and honors throughout his life.


Marilyn Monroe was a famous actress, also a sex symbol. She starred in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and How To Marry A Millionaire using a “dumb blonde” persona as a comedic effect. She also worked as a model and was one of the sex symbols at the time. She was a film producer and sunder as well. She won four Golden Globes and two BAFTA awards, as well as many others. She sang the popular song “Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend”.


Audrey Hepburn was a famous actress. Starred in Breakfast At Tiffany’s and Wait Until Dark. She also was in the Broadway play Gigi. She was a British actress who was trained in ballet and also worked as a model. She is one of the few actresses to have won an Oscar, Emmy, Grammy and a Tony Award.

What was popular in the 1950s?

Fashion was becoming important during this era for the first time in the world. There were many designers who became known by name. The most popular was Doir. The popular designers of the time held huge fashion shows in New York City and Paris, France were models wore their clothes and walked down runways, showing off their new designs.


Movies were still very popular then, as they were during the Depression era. The most popular movies from the fifties were 12 Angry Men, Singin' In The Rain, and Vertigo.


Hula hoops, Frisbees, Mr. Potato Head and Barbies were popular children's toys.


Nice cars such as Cadillac Convertibles and Mustangs were common and popular.


Popular televisions shows such as The Twilight Zone and I Love Lucy started up in the fifties and were very popular.

How did men dress in the 1950s?

The majority of the working men in the 50s were business men who worked in offices in the city. To go along with their jobs, they wore suits with matching ties and occasionally fedoras. Most mature men dressed this way all of the time, unless they had a formal occasion, then they would wear tuxedos. It was important to look neat and tidy, for both men and women. Short, combed over hair was the popular style during this time. Boys and teenagers went for a sportier look for school and everyday wear. They usually wore clean-pressed pants with a light-weight button up shirt. Some "rebels" in the fifties wore jeans with a leather jacket over a white tshirt. Movies such as Grease portray this style of dress for teenage boys, but it was uncommon.



How did women dress in the 1950s?

Women wore mainly dresses and skirts during this time. These skirts and dresses were made out of elaborate and spontaneous patterns that had a lot of colors. Teenagers wore pleated, neat skirts with some sort of matching shirt. Usually a three-quarter sleeve, tight neck polos, or a cardigan with a shirt under it. Grown women (who were mostly housewives) wore patterned dresses around the house. Many women and girls wore their hair up in sorts of buns and ponytails. When women went out of the house to parties or some sort of formal occasion, they wore evening gowns and fancier dresses depending on the occasion. Cosmetics began popular around this time so women wore make-up almost everyday to look presentable. Sleeve and shirt lengths were shorter than they had been before, but not by much. Fashion was starting up during this time so women had a lot to wear. Clothing manufacturing became cheaper, and so did the prices of the clothing.
